Gulf Coast Turtle and Tortoise Society
- The Gulf Coast Turtle and Tortoise Society (GCTTS) was founded in 1994 by a group in the Houston area that were concerned with the plight of turtles and tortoises. The founders set the following goals for the society:
- Provide turtle and tortoise rescue, rehabilitation, and release programs.
- Educate ourselves and the public, through public presentations and meetings, about all aspects of turtle and tortoise care, natural history, and conservation.
- Disseminate information concerning the plight of wild turtles and tortoises and effective efforts to help them.
- Provide an adoption service to our members for captive turtles and tortoises that need new homes.
- Each year GCTTS members speak about turtles and tortoises to thousands of children and adults at meetings, Earth Days, libraries, and schools.
- Our members and volunteers have accepted hundreds of injured and unwanted animals from the public to treat, adopt, or release, as appropriate. These turtles have been hit by a car, chewed on by dogs, neglected by their owners, or simply have grown inconvenient.
- The public is welcome at our next GCTTS meeting which is scheduled at the Houston Arboretum on May 21st, from 2PM to 4PM as part of the Urban Nature Series. We will have a care workshop as part of the program, as well as an interesting assortment of turtles and tortoises.
- More information about the GCTTS is available at our website, www.GCTTS.org, via e-mail at info@GCTTS.org, or through our hotline at 281-443-3383.
