River Cooter (Pseudemys concinna)

1.17.1 Description

Large (to 32 cm) freshwater turtle.

1.17.2 Habitat

A turtle of rivers. Prefers moderate currents, abundant aquatic vegetation, rocky bottoms. Is also found in large lakes, ponds, swamps, and cattle tanks. Has been found in brackish tidal marshes and in the Gulf of Mexico (perhaps washed out of its river home).

1.17.3 Behavior

A very shy turtle, leaving the water only to bask and nest. Will return to the water at the slightest provocation.

Adults are mainly herbivorous, prefering Naias, Lemna, Ceratophyllum, Sagittaria, and algae. Some animal foods (crayfish, insects, snails, tadpoles, and fish) are also taken.
